Facts: The Gray Whale is the 6th biggest whale in the world and weighs 40 tons and can grow to 50ft long. The Gray Whale can live 55 to 70 years. Gray Whales were once called the "Devil Fish" due to fighting and lashing out when whalers tried to hunt them. The Gray Whale lives around the west coast of the USA and around the east coast of Japan and China. The Gray Whales were hunted nearly to extinction but in 1943 they were voted endangered and then in the early 1970's they were taken off the list. During their protection the Gray Whale population greatly increased and now the current population is estimated to be between 15,000-24,000. Gray Whales, like their name, are gray in color.
